Midnight Train

I thought we were going to St. Petersburg to review visual effects with Algous Studios, the special effects house doing the 250-plus shots in HITLER KAPUT! But in the cab on the way to the station Marius said we were actually going up to do the color grading on the trailer.

Trains, trains, trains. There's a lot of that going on everywhere except in the U.S. I happen to love ridin' the rails. Very civilized.

I'm not sure which one of the three stations we ended up in. A Stalin-era construction featuring a bust of Lenin, I know that much. I thought it had a dreary elegance.

Production booked us into a first class sleeper. The cars were outfitted with drapery left-over from one of Trotsky's garage sales. Smelled like it, too.

Marius poached an electrical outlet in the corridor off of which to charge his phone.

Didn't matter. Wasn't any signal anyway.

The train pulled out of the station at exactly the appointed time. Seven and a half hours later we were in St. Petersburg.

The station at which we arrived bore more than a passing resemblance to the one we left.

Just change the name on the wall and swap out Lenin for Peter and here you are in the 'Burg.

And there are some lovely accents in other parts of the station itself.

Bottom line is, this excursion is only a 24-hour jaunt. I"m not going to have a chance to see anything. Even as I write this I'm sitting in a color grading theater while it gets darker and darker outside. We did drive past the Winter Palace. And I've gamboled about many beautiful streets in an early-morning search for sustenance. But a deeper exploration of this amazing city will have to wait.

No, it was something like the 'Nevsky Express,' I think. I'm very sure I'm wrong.
